About President

What is President?

President is just one of many names for the game, most of which are vulgar and some of which are scatological, and the game itself is played in a variety of forms with varying rules. Aside from the basic object and method of play, what unites them all is the distinguishing feature of "social status," in which the players not only adopt different roles depending on how well or poorly they are doing but also change their relative seating positions from deal to deal in accordance with their respective roles.

Gameplay

To begin, the player to the dealer's left leads (face up) any single card or any set of cards of equal rank (for example, three fives). Then, in turn, each player must either pass (not play any cards) or play face-up a card or set of cards that beat the previous play.

A single card with a higher value beats a single card. A set of cards can be beaten only by a higher set of the same number of cards. So, if the previous player played two sixes, you can beat it with two kings or two sevens, but not with a single king or three sevens (though you could play two and hold onto the third).

It is not necessary to beat the previous play simply because you can; passing is always permitted. Passing also does not preclude you from playing the next time your turn comes up.

The game is repeated as many times as necessary around the table until someone makes a play that everyone else passes on. All of the cards that have been played are then turned face down and set aside, and the player who played the last (and highest) card in the previous "trick" begins again by leading any card or set of equal cards.
The highest social rank is awarded to the first player who runs out of cards, which is President. The Scum is the last player to be left with any cards.
